Hi I am torn between buying the novation impulse 49 or the m audio axiom 49 2nd edition. I am heading towards the impulse but I am not sure if it can be used with the iPad3. I can use the apple camera connection kit or use traditional midi vai an alesis io dock2.
Any help would be most appreciated
Thanks

- They both are kind of similar. I never owned the impulse but I did the Axiom 1st Gen though. I really love the feel of the key action on the Axiom. I tried both at guitar center and really liked both. The impulse does seem to have a more solid built feel bit other than that, both are really awesome
- edited December 2014@Paulmil1231 Apparently yes. Here's a YouTuber who was also debating between the Axiom and the Novation and went with Novation. She runs through her entire connection setup between the 61 key version and an iPad mini:
- I've been looking at akai mpk and novation nocturn mk2. Have you considered these two?
- Samson graphite is a well spec'd inexpensive option too.
- If you want portability I would recommend the Axiom Air mini32. But for home use and all around great midi controller, both the impulse and Axiom will be awesome!Check out the build quality of each though.
- I use an impulse 49 with my iPad, as long as you use a powered usb hub it works wonderfully.
I like the impulse keyboards, the arp is useful, separate midi ports are nice, it's easy to setup (the screen is helpful) and the keys feel good. I got mine on sale and Im happy with it, the build could be better in places but nothing terrible. I'd recommend it - I have an Impulse as well. And yes the the screen is really useful. It's working great!
- Thanks for your comments. I am swaying towards the impulse. I have read some reports that the axiom can suffer from what they call 'blue screen' where the screen goes blank which is apparently a problem with the mother board, which then needs to be flashed to fix it. I have asked m audio if they have sorted the problem out yet. I will post here if I hear from them
Best wishes
Paul M

Novation Impulse Ipad Garageband 3
So.. I just bought the Impulse 49 and I'm trying to make it work with Auria. Faders and transport.
Novation Impulse Ipad Garageband 1
Did a quick search on the forum about the Impulse and saw David Hodder from Novation saying it won't work with Auria because it needs/works with a 'daemon'. ???
Anyone has this or had?
@Syrupcore: was I dreaming or you use this one?
Thank you. Any help would huh.. Help.
Here's the way you can.download Garageband for Windows. for free, this method works on Windows 10 hassle free. Install Garageband for PC using this 2020 guide. Download GarageBand for Windows 10 PC & Laptop for free. Actually garageband is an iOS app which cant be directly used in any Windows PC. Garageband for windows software download.
This feels very good by the way.

- Auria has no MIDI (as yet) so I would be amazed if you could control the faders etc., Plenty of other apps do though.
- edited December 2014You can control Auria's transport and mixer with external interfaces via Aurias Mackie hui/mcu. I got the 61 key version of impulse yesterday but haven't hooked it up to the iPad yet. I know the Impulse can be set up to send out other protocols then MIDI, should work with Auria, I'll know more once I've tried it myself.Edit: Btw, are the black keys a bit noisy when you hit them fast & lose? As opposed to the white keys which feels and sounds completely different. My black keys gives this 'something is a bit loose the In there' kinda sound when doing faster runs
- @ChrisG noisy keys? Yikes. Keep me posted on that one.
- Yes I know I should be able to do it. Anyway.. It's late here I can bang my head against the wall tomorrow. And yes.. The black keys sound like they have little marimbas inside when you pluck them fast. Some more than others, I think.Anyway.. Keep me posted and I will too. This seems like quite a beast.

I just thought the black keys where not up to the same quality as the white keys. But, that doesn't matter now. I killed my impulse. Don't use cheap, no-name, crappy USB hubs with cheap no-name power adapters, that can't get the voltage right.. Gonna have to send it back for a new one.

You think I should get a better hub? - @Macao95 said:@ChrisG said:@Trueyorky said:@ChrisG noisy keys? Yikes. Keep me posted on that one.Well most keyboards do. You think I should get a better hub?At least a somewhat decent power adapter. I used a really really cheap plastic no-name adapter w/ switchable voltage settings. I'm fairly sure that's the thing that killed my impulse (even with proper voltage settings). - For strange noisy keyboard's try typing on the Ensoniq SQ-80!

It relies on the Novation AutoMap prog, running on PC/Mac (not available on iOS) to act as a 'translator' between Impulse and DAW. That's what David Hodder was referring to as 'daemon'.Auria does recognise some MMC however, so basic transport control buttons should work.Good luck
- Exactly. I did get 'play' to work after changing the transport to mc in the keyboard but it would actually play three seconds later and even worse with the stop function. And that's all. But I'm not done yet. I'm 'kinda sick so I'm taking it easy with frustration. Last night I was a bit bummed that I could have got the Launchkey 49. It works out of the box, no powered hub, and it has those pads to control launchpad app. But after my experience with the Lk Mini I thought this would be much better. The Launchkey 49 doesn't even have semi-weighted keys. And these feel great for its price, I think. Better than anything I ever had.
